Best Tours from Galway: How to Choose the Right One (Cliffs, Aran Islands & Connemara)

If you’re staying in Galway and don’t have a car, day tours are the easiest way to explore the west of Ireland.

But once you start looking, things get confusing quickly. There are so many tours that seem to do exactly the same thing – same destinations, similar prices, slightly different descriptions – and choosing one ends up taking far more time than expected.

In this guide to the best day tours from Galway, I compare all the main options to the Cliffs of Moher, Aran Islands, and Connemara — so you can quickly decide which tour is actually worth it

When I started researching day tours from Galway, I quickly realized how overwhelming the options were. There are dozens of tours that look almost identical at first glance, but once you dig a little deeper, the differences start to matter.

To make sense of it all, I ended up creating a spreadsheet where I compared every single tour I could find – looking at things like price, duration, whether the Cliffs of Moher are seen from the water, or if entry to places like Kylemore Abbey is included.

At some point, I thought: this might actually be useful for other people too.

So that’s exactly what this post is.

It’s essentially my spreadsheet – but explained, structured, and hopefully much easier to navigate. If you’re trying to choose the right tour from Galway without spending hours comparing options yourself, this should save you quite a bit of time.

In the end, I found that the decision becomes much simpler once you look at it this way.

It really comes down to just two directions: south-west towards the Cliffs of Moher and the Burren, or north-west into Connemara.

If you’re planning a longer trip, I’ve put together a full 10-day Ireland itinerary without a car, where I used Galway as one of my main bases and combined these day tours with travel between different regions. It gives a clearer picture of how these tours fit into a bigger route across the country.

Tours from Galway at a Glance

If you just want a quick overview before diving into the details, this table sums things up.

As you’ll see, most tours fall into two main directions. South-west of Galway is where you’ll find the Cliffs of Moher, the Burren, and the Aran Islands – the classic, most photographed parts of the west coast. North-west, on the other hand, takes you into Connemara, where the focus shifts more towards landscapes, quieter roads, and places like Kylemore Abbey.

Use this as a starting point. Once you know which direction appeals more, it becomes much easier to narrow down the exact tour.

South-West of Galway: Cliffs of Moher, Burren and Aran Islands

Most tours from Galway head south, and this is where things can feel overwhelming at first.

The Cliffs of Moher are the main attraction, but the way you experience them varies more than you’d expect. Some tours focus only on the cliffs, others combine them with the Burren, and some include the Aran Islands, which changes the whole structure of the day.

At first glance, the tours look very similar. The differences only become clear when you start paying attention to a few specific details.

How to Choose the Right Cliffs of Moher Tour from Galway

Every tour includes the Cliffs of Moher – what changes is how you experience them.

Seeing the cliffs from above is impressive, but if the tour includes a boat cruise, you’ll get a completely different perspective from the water. It’s one of those additions that might not seem essential when booking, but often ends up being the part people remember most.

A tall, rugged sea stack covered in green moss rises from the blue-green sea, with steep, layered cliffs in the background under a cloudy sky. Cliffs of Moher from the water

Then there’s the Visitor Centre. When entry is included, everything feels more straightforward – you can access the main paths without worrying about timing or tickets. When it’s not, it’s still perfectly doable, but just slightly less seamless.

And then come the Aran Islands.

Including the islands changes the rhythm of the day entirely. Instead of one long stop, the experience is broken up into different moments – the drive, the ferry crossing, time on the island, and the return journey along the coast. It feels less like a standard tour and more like a full day out.

My Experience: Aran Islands & Cliffs of Moher Day Tour

During my trip, I chose one of the Aran Islands and Cliffs of Moher combination tours, mainly because I wanted to see as much as possible in one day.

A sandy beach with clear blue water in the foreground, stone houses and green fields on terraced hills in the background, and a stone ruin on a hilltop under a cloudy sky. Inisheer, Aran Islands
Inisheer, Aran Islands

It turned out to be exactly the kind of experience I was looking for. The day started with the drive through the Burren, followed by a ferry to Inisheer, where I spent some time exploring the island in typical Irish weather – lots of wind and rain.

On the way back, seeing the Cliffs of Moher from the water was a completely different experience compared to standing on top of them later. It was a long day, but it never felt rushed, and it ended up being one of the highlights of the trip.

North-West of Galway: Connemara and Kylemore Abbey

If the south is about iconic views, heading north-west into Connemara feels much quieter and more open.

This is a part of Ireland where the scenery slowly unfolds rather than hitting you all at once. You spend most of the day on the road, moving through valleys, along lakes, and across stretches where there’s very little around except the landscape itself.

A grand castle-like building sits by a calm lake, surrounded by lush green trees and hills, with a large branch framing the scene in the foreground. Kylemore Abbey, Connemara

Most tours mention the same places – Kylemore Abbey, scenic viewpoints, and parts of Connemara National Park – which makes them seem almost identical at first.

But here too, one detail makes a real difference.

The biggest difference here is whether Kylemore Abbey entry is included – use the table to compare.

I’ve included a couple of north-west alternatives here as well, even though they go beyond the classic Connemara/Kylemore route, because they still fall into the broader “north of Galway” direction.

How to Choose the Right Connemara Tour from Galway

The key thing to check here is whether the tour includes entry to Kylemore Abbey.

Some tours simply stop there, which gives you time to walk around and take in the setting. Others include the ticket, which means you can actually go inside and visit the gardens. It’s a small line in the description, but it changes how much you get out of the visit.

Apart from that, the differences are more subtle. Some tours focus purely on the scenery, while others add small experiences along the way, like sheepdog demonstrations. These don’t take up much time, but they do make the day feel a bit more connected to local life.

My Experience: Connemara & Kylemore Abbey Day Tour

I also took a Connemara and Kylemore Abbey tour, mainly because I wanted to see a different side of the west of Ireland.

And it really did feel completely different from the Cliffs of Moher. Instead of big, dramatic viewpoints, the day was more about the journey – driving through quiet landscapes, stopping at places like the Sky Road, and ending at Kylemore Abbey, which feels almost out of place in such a remote setting.

One of the small highlights was getting to feed sheep along the way, which made the whole experience feel a bit more personal and less like a typical sightseeing tour.

I also included this exact route in my 10-day Ireland itinerary without a car, where Connemara was one of the highlights and showed a completely different side of the west compared to the Cliffs of Moher.

How to Choose the Right Tour from Galway

Once you look at it this way, the decision becomes much more straightforward.

If you’re drawn to the places you’ve seen in photos – the cliffs, the coastline, the classic views – then heading south makes the most sense. Adding the Aran Islands gives that route a bit more depth and variety.

If you’re more interested in landscapes and don’t mind skipping the headline sights, Connemara offers a slower and more relaxed day.

And if you’re short on time, a simple Cliffs of Moher tour will still give you a good sense of the region without taking up the entire day.

Final Thoughts

Choosing a tour from Galway isn’t about finding the “best” one – it’s about choosing the right direction.

South gives you iconic Ireland: cliffs, coastline, and the Aran Islands.
North-west gives you space, quieter landscapes, and a slower pace through Connemara.

Both are easy to explore without a car – and both are worth your time.
